A most delightful melancholy

Photobucket
(I'm still trying to figure out how to use photobucket...which is why these pictures are all in their own posts...and all pictures are courtesy of the Hartford Courant reader submitted photo file.)

"If you wake up one fall morning and I'm gone, I apologize in advance." This was the warning I gave Bryce last week when the weather changed and it was suddenly fall. It is nothing personal. Sometimes a girl just wants to go home.

Don't get me wrong. I like my little house and my little neighborhood and I'm glad that Utah has fall (in its own fashion), but...it must be said...if you aren't from New England you just don't understand. No offense. My children aren't from New England either. Which is a manageable fact most of the time...except for the months of September and October.

Would anyone like to arrange for me to go home, just for a little while?

My brother, the Photographer, won his Google friend's photo contest and got to choose the September contest theme. He chose "Nothing Gold Can Stay."

Maybe you'd like to read it - isn't this how September feels?

Nature's first green is gold
Her hardest hue to hold
Her early leaf's a flower,
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.
~ Robert Frost
(born in California, adopted New Englander...maybe there is hope for my children.)

* and no, Mom, I have not been home during the fall since my last year of high school...which was 9 years ago...in case you've lost count.

For only $419 you can come on the 10th and go home on the 17th. That should get you here for the peak foliage. Of course, with your luck, we'd have a solid week of rain. If only you had someone to watch the kids.

I guess we'll have to tell Mollie to plan an October wedding so everyone will have a reason to come home in the fall. Everyone wants to come home in autumn. It is quite beautiful here. (But then it usually is very nice in June, too)

Have you been home in fall since you left for college? I guess you were here in September for Sarah's funeral but that was a little early for fall color in Connecticut. Anyway, wish you could be here.

I haven't been there in the fall since high school either, so what, 13 years for me I guess.

I have to agree that there is nothing like a New England fall. I got to re-experience it last year for the first time in over 10 years (since I left for college). It is breathtaking. I hope you can get back someday.

If it makes you feel any better, Kevin, our oldest, is very much a Utahn. He is always telling us there are too many trees here (Virginia). Derek and I can't believe he is the son of two Easterners. Where did we go wrong? :) (Maybe it was living in Utah for the first 5 years of his life).
